Yard Yoga was founded in 2014 by sisters, Sarah Campbell-Lloyd and Daphne Harman-Clarke. Their vision was to provide yoga classes in a warm, beautiful and welcoming space. During the 2020 lockdown, they developed an online studio for people to continue to practice at home, maintain their health and reduces stress. They believe that yoga classes should be accessible to everyone and it is never too late to start. So they have created a place where you can deepen and explore your yoga practice, achieve a greater sense of wellbeing and gain great health benefits from the infrared heating system in the studio.
Hot yoga is one of our most popular classes for both beginners and advance yogis. At Yard Yoga we have developed a Hatha based yoga sequence which addresses all areas of the body without putting any strain anywhere. It is easy on the arms and wrists and therefore suitable for most people. There are many health benefits from practicing including detoxification, building strength and increasing flexibility.
Yard Yoga have state of the art Infrared heating panels in the ceiling of our studio to heat you during your practice. The warmth that we feel from the Sun is infrared and it is a natural and safe form of energy, standing in the studio with the heaters set to room temperature feels like standing in the sunshine! Infrared penetrates into the top couple of centimeters of your skin to heat your body directly, it does not heat the air surrounding you.The room temperature starts at 30-32 degrees celsius and increases to about 36-38 degrees celcious.
Because infrared penetrates into your body it warms and stimulates your connective tissues, ligaments, blood in your capillaries, fat in the layers of your skin, your immune system, your cardiovascular system and your lymphatic system. Infrared is much more effective than conventional heating at stimulating your body. Being warmed up so effectively helps to loosen your joints and allows you to go deeper into your yoga practice. It also helps the body to naturally eliminate toxins that you may be storing, these are sweated out during class. Infrared is so effective it can help the body to heal from injuries, strains and pain. In combination with yoga practice it can help to heal scar tissue and skin problems. Infrared can help promote the metabolism when combined with yoga, it also gives your skin a healthy glow and leaves you feeling deeply relaxed.
Our air exchange system circulates fresh air from outside throughout the studio and removes the stale air to make sure you feel comfortable throughout your practice.
Controlling the humidity in the studio is very important to get the most out of your hot yoga practice. It doesn't matter how many people are in there sweating, the studio will remain at the correct level to keep you at your peak during your practice.
Fusing traditional vinyasa methodology with contemporary dynamic freestyle flow, this uplifting yoga practice integrates breath and movement, inner and outer alignment, strength and flexibility. These classes will appeal to new students or anyone who wants to refine their practice.
This gentle Hatha Yoga class is perfect for beginners, those recovering from illness and injury or looking for a more gentle class. The class is designed to combine both postures lying on the mat and standing to gently build up strength and flexibility. It is a great way to introduce yourself to yoga and build up to trying some of our other classes.
Warm yin yoga is restorative practice primarily with floor proses. The poses are held for a prolonged period of time to affect the deeper tissues of the body. It calms also the nervous system and leaving you feeling rejuvinated and rebalanced. The class is held in warm environment to allow your body and mind to go even deeper without the distraction of the space around you.
We has a Hot Hatha and a Hot Flow class at the studio. Both are suitable for all levels but have a different feel to them. Hot Hatha is a hatha based sequence which is light on the wrist and arms but addresses all parts of the body. Hot flow is a more dynamic class. The class will vary every time and has a flow like quality to it. Both classes are great for building up strength while increasing flexibility.
Yin -Yang Yoga is a gorgeous combination of a bit of fire and a bit of mellow to fully rebalance the physical and emotional body. Yin is the more internal part of this practice and the Yang is the more external part. The practice will start with a slower warm up, followed by some dynamic flow to heat the body and completed by a slow releasing Yin stretch.
These classes will provide a retreat in what can be a very busy & tiring time for many women. Gaining energy through practice, a woman can channel this energy to create a positive feeling about the birth of her child. Giving your body a chance to deeply relax in order to create space on both a physical and emotional level is key. The postures will support the physical changes that happen during pregnancy and in preparation for birth. Emphasis will be placed on releasing tension through breath and creating space in the abdomen. There is currently a pregnancy yoga class every Monday morning at 11am during term times. You can either buy class cards or drop-in for £12 per class.
Learn how to connect breath to movement in order to create full body activation. Throughout this 75 min class Yoga Asanas (postures), functional training and pilates inspired exercises will be used to fire up the whole body inside and out.
As I begin writing my thoughts on setting an intention the sun is setting and I can see this straight through my bedroom window. I think about the day just gone and go back to how I started this morning. During my meditation this morning I felt strongly connected to my feet. I felt them positively heavy an steady. So my intention was to stay with that grounded feeling during the day. Did I manage? Most of the time yes, but sometimes my thoughts were a little unstable. But as I end this day I am back to that solid grounded feeling as the sun sinks into the earth.
From my own journey yoga is one of the most liberating experiences.
If you are considering starting your yoga practice here are just a few reasons why you should do Yoga!
IT FEELS GOOD TO MOVE YOUR BODY. The reason why it feels good to move your body is that during most people's daily lives, the body doesn’t fully get used. To move and connect to parts of the body that feel disconnected allows you to feel better as a whole.
The foundation of all standing poses is Tadasana.
Mountain pose is a pose that brings you back to neutral. Standing at the top of your mat, feet together doesn’t seem too challenging right?
But this basic pose is one to get right, to practice your awareness in, to remind yourself to breathe in and to really feel your body being present.
I started doing facials almost by accident. I have been working as a freelance makeup artist for ten years and shortly after trained as a massage therapist.
I have been doing yoga on and off now for the past ten years. During this time I’ve tried hot yoga, vinyasa, hatha, restorative, yin and acroyoga, the list goes on and on… I’ve enjoyed all of these styles but I’ve something was always missing for me and I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
Having your eyebrows or eyeliner tattooed is truly empowering. Many women who enjoy yoga, swim, run, or enjoy any type of exercise, opt for semi permanent makeup. However hot and sweaty you get, it is a fantastic feeling knowing all you need to concentrate on is your breath, keeping your heart open or your core strong, rather than worrying that your eyebrows may have wiped off. The confidence that you gain by having permanent, perfect make-up remains with you, whatever you are doing.
Many people hear the word 'detox' being banded around, especially at this time of year when our bodies are suffering after all the indulgences of the Christmas season, but what does 'detox' actually mean?
Everybody’s journey to the yoga mat is different, as is the experience of the practice of yoga itself. Whether you like the physical aspects of strength building and stretching or the spiritual connection to yourself that it may induce, we all have our own story to tell.
Yoga brings us back together.
Sharing the time on the mat
stops the clutter in my head.
Let’s be completely honest and let’s start by saying that nothing beats going to an actual live yoga class to completely zone out, plus you are also learning yoga under the supervision of your teacher but I am writing this blog in favour of practicing yoga online.
